So the Royal Artillery employed AOPs - Air Observation Posts - slow-flying Auster aircraft that could spy out the enemy and radio their positions back to the gunners far behind their own lines.Pilot Officer Tom Harness flew one of these spotter planes, and when he was set upon by fast enemy fighters, he was to find that piloting an AOP was anything but A-okay!
