The jungles of Burma can be a terrifying and dangerous place at the best of times, but in the Second World War, when Japs could be lurking in every bit of cover, one mistake could be fatal. To survive in these conditions meant you had to be ever aware, your senses quiveringly alert at all times.
Sergeant Tom Soames was like that and so were the men in his platoon. All except one, who saw Tom as his passport to an easy life amid the rigours of war.
